Overview

As an effort to address challenges and future of interdisciplinary and intergenerational capacities in disaster risk reduction, UNESCO Regional Sciences Bureau for Asia and the Pacific jointly with the International Center For Interdisciplinary and Advanced Research of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (ICIAR LIPI), STAG (Science and Technology Advisory Group) UNISDR, facilitated the birth of U-INSPIRE. This  collaborative work responds proactively to the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, which recognized shared responsibilities of all stakeholders to reduce risks. UNESCO, ICIAR LIPI, and U-INSPIRE hosted the Asia and the Pacific Regional workshop on Strengthening, Empowering, and Mobilizing Youth and Young Professionals in Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation (SETI) for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in Indonesia, held in 1-4 November 2018. With the additional support from UNISDR, the workshop facilitated discussions, networking, and sharing on the use of SETI in building resiliency. The workshop also hosted the launching of U-INSPIRE  Indonesia, witnessed by 52 workshop participants from the Asia and Pacific, including from Pakistan. This lead to the encouragement, motivation and commitments of all workshop participants to join and expand the concept of U-INSPIRE to support the achievement of the Sendai Framework targets in each countries. 

U-INSPIRE Pakistan is a volunteer group of youth and young professionals to work and contribute their science, engineering, technology, and innovation for DRR related activities in Pakistan. U-INSPIRE Pakistan objectives is to strengthen the partnerships, interaction, networking, communicating, discussing, and sharing among the members from all national universities. U-INSPIRE Pakistan member are youth and young professionals irrespective of their discipline. The platform will have interesting outcome reflecting the significance of science (including social science), engineering as well as non-engineering disciplines in DRR activities. U-INSPIRE Pakistan, multidisciplinary voyage and common workspace for young scientist and professionals, housed at NED University of Engineering & Technology – Karachi to contribute and mobilize their SETI to support the disaster risk reduction activities as well as building resiliency across the country.
